The String of Conformity

Overview

Have you ever seen a group of people on the street wearing similar clothes or heard a crowd around you discussing the same topic and then found yourself unconsciously following their footsteps or thoughts?

Conformity often flows like water, tightly connecting people like threads to form groups. This flow and connection can give people a stronger sense of belonging and security, but it can also lead them to lose their ability to think independently.

Description

This book depicts how people conform in groups, regardless of whether this conformity is positive or negative. Still, it does have a profound impact on individuals and society, including the normalization of social behaviour and the emergence of group thinking. This book uses contrasting red and blue to highlight people’s conformist or non-conformist behaviour. These illustrations depict only a few scenarios that mix in conformity, and I intend to inspire reflection on our behaviour: Should we participate or reject conformity? Should we think more deeply? Should we make ourselves more independent in our thinking?

Illustration Creation

This consists of 8 illustrations and a cover illustration, all focusing on common examples of societal conformity. The illustrations are related to holiday celebrations, online comments, social media, meeting discussions, etc. The cover illustration shows a hand bound by multiple ropes and stretching forward, symbolizing the struggle between conformity and individualism. Each illustration is coloured red and blue to highlight the contrast between conformity and nonconformity. The illustrations showcase the power of social influence and the importance of individual thinking and decision-making.
